Lunch and Learn: Baseball in a River Town: From New Albany’s First Game to its First Superstar

Baseball, with its revered history of players, teams, and statistics, has early roots in Indiana. New Albany also played a role in the early history of the game in the state. Justin Endres investigated the origins of the sport in the region. Endres questions who organized the first baseball games, and how did the sport that became a national pastime take hold here? According to Endres, “Baseball’s start in New Albany opens up a window into the past—the lively and booming post-Civil War New Albany.” Baseball has a colorful history—learn about its local development, from the first pitch thrown on September 29, 1866 to New Albany’s first sports superstar, Jouett Meekin (son of the famous riverboat pilot James Meekin.) Lunch and Learn is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Endres, an attorney at Young, Lind, Endres & Kraft, practices in Southern Indiana. He is a New Albany native, and along with his wife Kara, have three kids. Endres was the President of New Albany Little League Softball and is currently the President of the combined New Albany Little League as well as the New Albany Track Club.
