Lunch and Learn: “Community Journalism- A Casual Conversation”
Presented by The News and Tribune’s Publisher Bill Hanson, Editor Susan Duncan, and Advertising Director Jeff Smith.
October 15, 2019 | Noon-1:00 PM

The world of print journalism continues to undergo huge contemporary changes as the switch to the 24-hour digital news cycle has become the standard of the day. Members of the News and Tribune staff will lead October’s Lunch & Learn discussing the importance of community, the future of print newspapers, and journalism in the era of “fake news.”

The News and Tribune was originally two separate newspapers, The Evening News in Clark County and The Tribune in Floyd County. In 2011, the papers merged to serve both counties. Today, the News and Tribune has a circulation of about 9,400 and is a Monday-Saturday daily newspaper. Local news is the focus with special emphasis on government, business, education, sports, and crime reporting.

According to the American Press Institute: “The purpose of journalism is thus to provide citizens with the information they need to make the best possible decisions about their lives, their communities, their societies, and their governments.” This is an important role which should not be taken for granted in our democracy. Questions about journalism and the news business are encouraged during this Lunch and Learn conversation.

Lunch and Learn is a free program, however, registration is required below. Guests can bring a lunch and the Carnegie Center will supply beverages.
