2022 African American Read-In 2022 via Zoom

Saturday February 19, 2022 • 11 AM-12 PM 

In celebration of Black History Month, the Carnegie Center for Art and History is participating in the National African American Read-In on Saturday, February 19th from 11 AM-12 PM.  Hosting the event will be spoken word artist KennyFresh, and the event will include featured readers such as Deedee Cummings! Deedee will be sharing some of her lastest work from her series, Kayla: A Modern Day Princess. The public is also encouraged to both listen and to participate in this free program by reading short excerpts by African American authors in an open mic format via Zoom. Selections should be 2-3 minutes long and can be by living or deceased authors. Works of fiction and nonfiction are encouraged for this all-ages audience.

The African American Read-In, formed in 1990, is the first and oldest event dedicated to diversity in literature. Established by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English, the read-in was designed to make literacy an integral part of Black History Month. More than six million people have participated in the African American Read-In held in libraries, schools, bookstores, coffee shops, churches, prisons, and wherever people gather to recognize the written word.
