“When people ask me what I do, I like to tell them I make the biggest diamonds in the world. But instead of working with the hardest substances on earth, I work with the softest…cloth.” MJ Kinman

In celebration of the annual Form, Not Function: Quilt Art at the Carnegie, on view August 15-October 31, the Carnegie Center presents a virtual Lunch and Learn presentation by MJ Kinman, one of the featured artists. A Louisville, Kentucky-based artist, Kinman will discuss her story as a creative person and what she is making and doing to encourage quilt creativity in others.

Kinman’s passion for color and light finds expression in her large quilted “portraits” of diamonds and other gemstones. Kinman produces a range of artworks, patterns, classes, and other services that also extend her passion to other sewing creatives. She is one artist who has embraced the possibilities of working in online communities.

Kinman considers herself a self-taught artist and pursued professional careers in social work and corporate project management before becoming a fulltime textile artist. Her work is represented in galleries and private collections. She has worked with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History to create a series on the National Gem Collection. In 2018, she received a commission from the Maker’s Mark Distillery for their permanent art collection. Her art has appeared frequently in print and her work was featured three times on the PBS series Quilting Arts TV. The 2020 Lunch and Learn series is generously sponsored by Sara and Jamey Aebersold.
