Lunch and Learn- Letty Walter and the B.P.W. Hoosiers: More Than a Softball Team
Tuesday, March 17, 2020
Noon - 1:00 PM

A Lunch and Learn panel discussion, Letty Walter and the B.P.W. Hoosiers: More Than a Softball Team, will be held Tuesday, March 17 at The Carnegie Center for Art and History from noon-1:00 PM. This talk will discuss the B.P.W. Hoosiers, a women’s softball team who were not only athletes, but societal trailblazers and their importance in the Floyd County community. Lunch and Learn is free and open to the public, but registration is required below.

This talk will also accompany an exhibition of B.P.W. Hoosier history and memorabilia that will be on view in the Carnegie Center’s Sally Newkirk Gallery from February 29 – May 2, 2020.

Formed in the late 1950’s, the B.P.W. Hoosiers took their name from their sponsors, the Floyd County chapter of the Business and Professional Women, who were enthusiastic supporters. Leading the team’s formation was Letty Walter, a local teacher who also worked for the New Albany-Floyd County Parks Department. Walter learned the sport of slow pitch softball, taught it to other women, and the B.P.W. Hoosiers were formed shortly after. They soon found success on the field winning ten Louisville City titles in a row, among many other achievements.
