From History to Story: Till Taught by Pain, a Biography Told Through Fiction In-Person
In this presentation, Louisville author Susan Coventry will discuss her new novel, Till Taught by Pain. Set in turn-of-the-20th-century Baltimore, it tells the story of Dr. William S. Halsted, the first Chief of Surgery at the brand-new Johns Hopkins Hospital. Although a pioneer in his field, Halsted struggled with a lifelong use of cocaine (acquired during experiments using the drug for local anesthesia) and morphine (acquired during treatment for his use of cocaine.) It is equally the story of the abiding love of his wife, Caroline, who enabled his brilliant career. Susan will talk about ways to transform history into fiction while staying as true to the historical facts.
