Art in Autumn: 🧺 Indigenous Inspired Baskets

Art in Autumn: 🧺 Indigenous Inspired Baskets In-Person

Discover the artistry and heritage woven into the ancient craft of basket-making. In this hands-on fiber arts workshop, patrons will explore Indigenous coiled basket traditions from tribes such as the Wintun and Chumash, learning how baskets were essential for cooking, gathering, and trade as well as served as expressions of identity, skill, and culture.

After a brief cultural introduction, participants will learn to wrap and coil rope using colorful yarn to create their own small decorative baskets. Along the way, they’ll explore symbolic color choices, geometric patterns, and shaping techniques that mimic traditional forms. Whether new to fiber arts or ready to build on existing skills, visitors will leave with a one-of-a-kind basket and a deeper appreciation for the intersection of function and beauty in Indigenous craft.

This class is perfect for middle schoolers, teens, and adults, blending creativity, cultural respect, and fine motor skill development in a meaningful and meditative activity.
