Art History Illustrated: The Iconography of Motherhood

Art History Illustrated: The Iconography of Motherhood In-Person

The earliest images of mothers come from the dawn of civilization. With ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece as our departure points, we’ll trace the development of the visual language of Mothering across time and space with art historian Brenda Edgar, featuring maternal goddesses, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Dutch Baroque peasants, various European monarchs, and intimate Impressionist vignettes. But beyond mothers as subjects, you’ll also get to know famous artists who happened to be mothers, from Lavinia Fontana and Artemisia Gentileschi to Käthe Kollwitz and Louise Bourgeois.

Join us for our “Art History Illustrated” talk series, held the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. This monthly illustrated talk series is presented by art historian Brenda Edgar, in collaboration with The Floyd County Carnegie Library Cultural Arts Center.
