Art History Illustrated, People of the Sea: Discovering/Constructing the Ancient Minoans In-Person
When Sir Arthur Evans discovered the Palace of Knossos on the Greek island of Crete in 1900, he struck archaeological gold. But the complex, which he believed to be the original site of the labyrinth of King Minos, was little more than a pile of rubble. He oversaw its “restoration,” which was as imaginative as it was scholarly. How much of what we associate with Ancient Minoan people is Minoan, and how much is Evans? Dig deep with art historian Brenda Edgar into this exuberant culture, with its lively, enigmatic paintings of bull rituals and sea life, its beautifully decorated pottery, and its famous “Snake Goddess” sculptures.
