Art History Illustrated, By Our Own Hands: The Feminist Art Movement of the 1960s through the 1980s In-Person
“Do women have to be naked to get into the Met?” This question was spelled out on a poster printed in 1989 by the Guerilla Girls, an anonymous and passionate group of feminist artist activists. They dressed in gorilla suits and waged an incendiary multimedia campaign against the dearth of female artists represented in American museums-- even as they are replete with images of female nudes. Inspired by the idea of true gender equality, artists such as Judy Chicago, Cindy Sherman, and Barbara Kruger created powerful art and shook up the art world like never before.
Join us for our “Art History Illustrated” talk series, held the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. This monthly illustrated talk series is presented by art historian Brenda Edgar, in collaboration with The Floyd County Library Cultural Arts Center.
