Art History Illustrated, From Pittsburgh to Paris: The Life and Work of Henry Ossawa Tanner

Art History Illustrated, From Pittsburgh to Paris: The Life and Work of Henry Ossawa Tanner In-Person

Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937) was the first African American artist to achieve international acclaim. Born into a distinguished Pittsburgh family, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he was the only Black student. But as he began his career in Philadelphia, he encountered demoralizing racism. Upon traveling to Paris, France, he found that his race was not an issue there, and he chose to live there for the rest of his life, painting many outstanding landscapes, genre scenes, and religious subjects. Join art historian Brenda Edgar to get to know Tanner and his place in the history of art.

Join us for our “Art History Illustrated” talk series, held the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. This monthly illustrated talk series is presented by art historian Brenda Edgar, in collaboration with The Floyd County Library Cultural Arts Center.
