Art History Illustrated, Trip through the Unconscious: An Introduction to Surrealism In-Person

In 1900, the famous Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud published his book, On The Interpretation of Dreams. Rather than understanding dreams as having origins outside of us, such as in the spirit world or the future, Freud theorized that they are in fact the products of our own unconscious minds. These ideas would be an enormous influence on the international movement in the art and literature of the 1930s and 40s known as Surrealism. In this mind-blowing talk with art historian Brenda Edgar, you’ll see many “dreamscapes” as created by artists like Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, and Giorgio de Chirico, and learn how they have as many different meanings as they have viewers.
